Facial Cosmetic Services

Your face can reveal the first signs of aging. Wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet, and folds around the chin and on the face all contribute to an aging appearance. Lotions, skin treatments, and facials can slow the progress and temporarily improve your appearance. However, a facelift is the only lasting solution that can provide life-changing results.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. The procedure repositions the skin layers and sculpts the face to improve definition and smooth wrinkles and skin folds. Our oral surgeons have performed thousands of facelifts on men and women of all ages to reverse the signs of aging and boost the confidence of our patients.

During a facelift, our surgeons carefully open a flap of skin on either side of the face. The incisions are around the ears and in the hairline for minimal scarring. The face’s tissues and muscles are redistributed and repositioned to reduce sagging, remove excess fat, and tighten the skin. A neck lift may be performed at the same time as a facelift, as well.

What Aging Problems Does a Facelift Correct?

Having realistic expectations regarding what a facelift can do to improve your appearance is important. A facelift can address specific age-related issues, including:

  • Sagging around the cheeks
  • Excess skin along the lower jawline
  • Deep folds running from the nose to the mouth
  • Sagging or loose neck fat or skin
  • Double chin

A facelift does not address issues around the eyes or drooping eyelids. However, the surgeons at Riverside Oral Surgery can perform browand eyelid lifts in addition to a facelift, if needed.

Who is a Good Candidate for Rhytidectomy?

Anyone dissatisfied with their facial appearance because of the signs of aging, gravity, hereditary sagging, or extreme weight loss is a good candidate for a facelift. A facelift can offer a great solution if you have lost facial volume, sagging skin, or deep creases or folds on the face. Most patients are in their fifties or sixties when they first consider a facelift, but we are increasingly performing facelifts on patients in their forties who want to preserve a youthful appearance.

Our surgeons carefully evaluate each patient to determine whether they are appropriate candidates for a facelift. If you are considering a rhytidectomy, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Have realistic expectations for the results of your facelift
  • Good overall health and skin elasticity
  • No bleeding or healing disorders that could compromise recovery
  • Non-smoker

What Should I Expect During my Facelift Consultation?

Our surgeons thoroughly evaluate each patient during an initial consultation to determine whether a facelift is appropriate and will achieve the patient’s desired results. To determine suitability, your surgeon reviews your medical history, overall health, and aesthetic goals. From there, a customized treatment plan is developed based on your concerns.

The first steps include a detailed examination and measurements of your facial structure, shape, and skin condition. Our surgeons explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions so you can decide whether a facelift is right for you. We also take multiple photographs of your face and jaw from various angles and use them to create digital images of the anticipated results.

Traditional Facelift vs. Mini Facelift

Traditional Facelift

A traditional facelift focuses on improving the appearance of the entire face. Your surgeon can smooth wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead, remove fat on the jowls and cheeks, and tighten facial skin and the underlying muscles. The goal of a traditional facelift is to restore a younger, fresher, more rested appearance. Our surgeons strive to ensure flawless and natural results rather than an unnatural look that is tight or artificial. Most patients look at least a decade younger following a traditional facelift.

Mini Facelift

For patients who do not need the benefits of a complete rhytidectomy, a mini facelift can improve the appearance and youthfulness of the lower third of the face, which shows the earliest signs of aging. Incisions are smaller, and the jowls and jaw’s skin, tissues, and muscles are targeted. This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and requires less healing time than a rhytidectomy performed under general anesthesia. If you look in the mirror and see signs of aging you’d like to correct, it may be time to consider a facelift.
