    Tooth Extraction

    What is Tooth Extraction?

The tooth extraction procedure involves pulling the tooth directly from its socket in the jawbone. In some cases, tooth extraction is necessary in an emergency. Extracting a single tooth can result in issues concerning your chewing capability, jaw joint complications, and the potential shifting of teeth, significantly affecting your dental health. To avoid these complications, our oral surgeons will discuss alternatives to extractions and consider options for replacing the removed tooth in most cases.

    Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Tooth extraction is a situation that many of us will have to face at some point or another.
You may need a tooth pulled for several reasons, including:

    • Severe tooth decay where the resulting infection cannot be eliminated without removing the tooth.
    • As a result of severe gum disease, called periodontal disease, that can destroy the bone around the tooth so it becomes loose and will either fall out or must be removed.
    • To deal with issues caused by overcrowding.
    • Removing an impacted tooth, which is often the case with wisdom tooth extractions.
    • Removing a tooth or the remains of a tooth damaged by trauma, for example, after a sporting or vehicular accident.

Two types of tooth extractions can be performed. The first is an ordinary or straightforward tooth extraction using local anesthesia to eliminate pain or discomfort. This is suitable for teeth that are fully erupted and visible in the mouth. The second type of extraction is a surgical extraction, which is necessary when the tooth is impacted and may be stuck in the jawbone or has not erupted properly.

    Tooth Extraction Process

The procedure for extracting a tooth is determined by how the tooth is damaged and where the tooth is positioned in your mouth. Some tooth extractions are simple and fast, while others may necessitate surgical intervention.

The typical procedure consists of the following steps:

    • Your dentist will begin with a thorough dental examination, which may include X-rays and a thorough medical history. You describe what’s wrong and talk about your cosmetic concerns.
    • You must inform your dentist about any medical issues you have and any drugs you are taking prior to the procedure.
    • To treat any infection concerns, your dental specialist may prescribe antibiotics ahead of removing a tooth. In the meantime, they may prescribe pain relief medications.
    • When you’re ready, your dentist will administer an anesthetic to alleviate any pain. Tooth extraction is normally completed quickly, and you may only require topical numbing. However, if you are anxious or your dental care provider anticipates that the tooth extraction will be more complicated, Riverside Oral Surgery offers heavier sedation.
    • Usually, there is still enough crown for your dentist to work with. They use specialized dental forceps to hold the tooth and rock it back and forth to loosen it if they are confident that the extraction won’t break the tooth. The connective tissue can be separated using additional tools. The tooth is subsequently extracted using the forceps.
    • Sectioning is necessary for certain teeth. Your dentist may use this technique when a tooth is too securely embedded in its socket or if the root is bent and the socket is unable to expand sufficiently to remove it. It involves dividing the tooth into sections and then extracting each individually.
    • Surgery can be necessary if there isn’t enough tooth visible above the gum line or if more than one tooth needs to be extracted. This is generally the case with wisdom teeth that have become impacted. To get to your teeth, your dentist will make incisions in your gums. Then, they will separate the root and extract it. The gums are then sutured shut.

After you have a tooth extracted, it will need time to heal, and this timeframe can depend on the extraction procedure used and the tooth’s location.

How Long Does Healing Take After Tooth Extraction?

Generally, healing should be well underway a week to 10 days afterward. After tooth extraction, the empty socket would heal, and a blood clot would form in it. It is essential not to disturb this clot because it can slow down healing.
There is no need to worry, as your dentist will give you lots of advice to speed up the healing process, some of which may include:

    • Manage any pain and discomfort with prescribed painkillers or over-the-counter painkillers.
    • Get plenty of rest in the first 24 hours after the tooth extraction, and avoid eating very hard or crunchy foods or anything with seeds that could get stuck in the gum around the extraction site.
    • After a tooth is removed, your dentist will probably place some gauze over the extraction site, and it’s essential to keep this in place as long as recommended, which could be two or three hours afterward, to ensure bleeding has ceased.
    • You can use an ice pack to reduce swelling after the extraction but only leave it on for 10 minutes each time.
    • Avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously or gargling; do not use straws, as these habits can dislodge the blood clot.
    • You can use a warm salt water rinse to clean your mouth gently after the first day, and this helps prevent any infections and helps promote faster healing.
    • When you go to sleep, you may find it more comfortable to prop your head up on pillows instead of lying flat or on your side.

You will also need to make some changes to your diet immediately after tooth extraction, especially if you have back teeth removed and need to avoid chewing and grinding up food. Instead, choose foods that require minimal or no chewing, such as soups, applesauce, and soft puddings, until the extraction site begins to heal. As healing progresses, you can gradually introduce more solid and harder-to-chew foods back into your diet.

What to Expect Day by Day After Tooth Extraction

There are multiple stages to the healing process.

Things you can expect and the amount of time it will take for your mouth to heal following tooth extraction include:

    Day 1

The first twenty-four hours after tooth extraction, you might experience some minor bleeding, slight discomfort, and facial swelling. These are all perfectly normal as healing begins, and unless you notice more worrying signs or have excessive pain and discomfort, there should not be any need to contact your dental office.

    Day 2

At this point, the blood clot should be fully formed in the empty socket, and healing should be well underway. Any swelling should start to subside.

    Day 3

If you look at the extraction site, you will probably see it is beginning to close up as healing continues.

    Day 4

By day four, the extraction site should have almost completely closed up, and any discomfort and swelling should be minimal. At this point, you should be able to eat a greater range of harder and more solid foods.

What to Expect Day by Day After Tooth Extraction

It is rare to have problems after tooth extraction, but they can occur occasionally. If you are concerned that your tooth extraction site isn’t healing properly, it’s always worth contacting your dental office. Possible signs of problems include swelling that fails to subside within two or three days, an extraction site that continues to bleed heavily, and noticing an unpleasant taste. If the infection is more severe, it can cause headaches and fever.

At Riverside Oral Surgery, our board-certified oral surgeons are focused on delivering the best care possible.
